Buying a used sauna: a practical checklist
What to inspect, what to ask the seller and how to pay safely when you buy a used sauna.

Before you go
Used saunas on our site are sold as-is, so take your time. Ask the seller for more photos, the brand and model, the age, where it was kept (indoors or outside) and why they're selling. Check whether they offer local pickup or shipping, and plan how you'll move it: a sauna is heavy and often needs a trailer, several people or professional movers.
What to inspect in person
- Wood: look for rot, soft spots, deep cracks, mold or water stains, especially on the floor, the lower boards and around the door.
- Roof and seals (outdoor saunas): check for leaks, damaged shingles or membrane, and gaps where heat escapes.
- Door and glass: it should close properly; check glass for cracks.
- Benches: solid, smooth and free of splinters or loose boards.
- Heater: ask to see it running if possible. For wood stoves, check the firebox, door seal and chimney; for electric heaters, the controls, wiring and stones.
- Trailer (mobile saunas): tires, lights, brakes, hitch and paperwork.
Electrical and installation
Electric heaters often need a dedicated circuit and a qualified installation. Plan to have a licensed electrician inspect the heater and your supply before you use it. Wood stoves need correct clearances and a sound chimney; when in doubt, ask a professional.
Paying safely
Payment happens directly between you and the seller; we don't handle it. See the sauna in person before you pay, get a simple written receipt with the price and condition, and never wire money or pay with gift cards. Be wary of prices that seem too good, sellers who won't meet, or pressure to pay quickly. If something feels off, report the listing.
